TEACHING OF WRITING IN ELEMENTARY GRADES
This What Works Clearinghouse practice guide provides evidence-based recommendations for the teaching of writing in elementary school.
1. Provide daily time for students to write.
2. Teach students to use the writing process for a variety of purposes.
Assist students to use strategies for writing in each phase of the process. Guide students to select and use appropriate writing strategies independently.
3. Teach students to become fluent with handwriting, spelling, sentence construction, typing, and word processing.
4. Create an engaged community of writers.
