Literacy th@t Works is a professional learning program experience focused on helping 6-12 teachers from diverse content areas teach students how to engage effectively with multiple perspectives and sources. Literacy th@t Works is designed to be a multi-year program, progressing from literacy foundations and routines to teacher leadership in literacy. The program has consistently shown significant gains in student writing and provides teachers with instructional strategies for the classroom.

Literacy th@t Works 2025 - 2026
Participating teachers earn micro-credentials from the National Writing Project with an additional option to earn 3 hours of graduate credit. Participating teachers receive a stipend up to $1450 and contribute to decisions about school purchases of $2500 in classroom literacy resources. The SMLC team will arrange lodging and group meals as well as reimburse for additional meals, mileage, and substitute costs.

Additional School Opportunities Open to all CLSD Teachers

Graduate Certificate in Teaching Writing
Up to 4 teachers per CLSD school are eligible for tuition waivers to complete this credential. Two additional teachers are able to receive tuition waivers to complete graduate courses within the program.

SMLC Study Groups
Monthly virtual study groups will be facilitated by SMLC leaders from MU, UCM, and UMSL. These meetings build knowledge around teacher-generated topics such as AI and Disciplinary Literacy.

SMLC Miniconference
Professional conversation and teacher-led workshops sharing classroom literacy practices. Offered the first week of June in Columbia, MO.

Scholastic Writing Awards
Students in grades 7-12 can enter this writing contest with regional and national awards and scholarship opportunities. SMLC facilitators can lead classroom or afterschool virtual workshops to help students generate and polish writing entries.

Pop-Up PD Science of Reading
