Providing Feedback on Student Writing

One way to provide feedback to students about their writing is to use the Flash Feedback method by Matthew Johnson.

  • It focuses on one or two learning objectives

  • Don’t focus on grammar or spelling if the learning objective is not about grammar or spelling

  • Give feedback on the thinking

  • Have students correct and reflect on their work

    • Compare their writing over time

    • Contrast their writing to a mentor texts

  • Wise Interventions

    • Something relational- I believe you can do this, I have high expectations for you

    • Something positive- something the student said in the writing or
in class, bravery in sharing their thinking

  • Use technology to speed the process

    • Control F to find

    • Database of common feedback to copy

This video provides even more ideas on how to provide feedback.
